Open Letter To Nwaokoro Olakunle Nzube (ULSSA President elect for
2015/16 academic session) by Hammed Mustapha Olawale (CATALYST).
Students of the faculty of science and neighboring faculties predicted
that the number one faculty (Faculty of Science) in the prestigious
university of Lagos was on the cusp of change pon greatness when the
two of the finest ulssaites (Mister Nwaokoro Olakunle Nzube and Miss
Osinuga Iyanuoluwa) took it to the polls in the recently conducted
popular ULSSA elections. It was a win-win situation at hand as it was
crystal clear that whoever emerge as president among the two aspirant
will take the faculty from where it is to where we want it to be. The credibility of the two finest ulssaites was reflective in the outcome
of the election as they both had not less than five hundred votes each
from the about one thousand three hundred ulssaites that came out to
cast their votes. All that been said, Nwaokoro Olakunle Nzube emerged
as he was declared president elect. So therefore, Mr President elect
sir, permit me to once again congratulate you as regards your election
as ULSSA president come 2015/16 academic session.
Now let us focus on what's next. As someone who has ulssa at heart and
also an advocate of common sense, I feel obliged to relate to you sir
the expectancy of ulssaites from your forthcoming administration.
Before going into further details, you must agree with me that there
is so much work to be done in the various sectors of the faculty and
I do not suppose you are ignorant of the few things I do hereby
outline before you, I just want it to appear as a reminder to you. I
believe you want to succeed as a leader. By this I mean excelling in
the various sectors which include what I tag your E-USES. The mnemonic
E-USES is purposeful as this letter is to an undergraduate of computer
science in an E-age but it has no real technicality as used in this
context. Your E-USES as expected by ulssaites are as follows ;
(1) Eradication of the thirteenth department.
(2) Unification of the faculty
(3) Student Welfare
(4) Empowerment and
(5) Succession
(1) Eradication of the thirteenth department : In my recent interview
with an outgoing ULSSA officer, I was made to understand that
ulssaites have over the years treated her leadership as the thirteenth
department of the faculty. This evinces that people do not believe in
their past leaders as they are deem incompetent to be in the cockpit
of representation. Mr Nwaokoro, every successful leader needs the
followers to believe in him/her and that is never accidental, it is
earned. Believing in your administration will invariably earn you the
support of all ulssaites. Your first impression in office will be
pivotal in how ulssaites will relate with your administration and do
not forget that their is never a second chance at making a first
impression. Be that person the larger percentage of ulssaites believed
so much in, let's see that you belong to nobody and that you are for
everybody. Your administration's take off will go a long way in making
ulssaites believe in you.
(2) Unification of the faculty : United we stand and divided we fall.
It is almost a tradition in the faculty to have three sub-divisions ;
physical, chemical and biological with varying cultures.
Yes we have constituencies but then we are one big family. When
sectional politics is played, the people suffers. Let your
administration preach oneness by deploying means to bring to light
programs that will unite the faculty as one and by also been even with
appointments and dealings. Always remember that the mutually
exclusiveness of the species of snakes is solely responsible for the
attack suffered from other animals. Also, a single bracelet does not
jingle and it takes a bunch of sticks to sweep effectively. Focus on
the unification of the faculty as this will earn us more respect and
integrity internally and in our dealings with other faculties.
(3) Student Welfarism : The welfare and students right should be a key
aspect of your administration. Students can experience welfare issues
at any point in time during your reign as the number one ulssaite and
your tenure should affect positively every financial member of ulssa
as the ulssa dues is our part of the bargain. Student welfarism should
be your ultimate priority as that is the part that can directly affect
every ulssaites. The following are welfare issues your administration
should make adequate preparations for.
(a) Homesickness (b) Financial Problems (c) Mental health problems and
(d) Harassment.
(A) Homesickness: Homesickness can result in poor health, lowered
concentration and poor focus, depression, absent mindedness and
psychomatic symptoms. Students may feel ashamed of being homesick and
reluctant to tell anyone about it even their friends.
If symptoms persist and are seriously inhibiting student's ability to
function, socially or academically, then its probably a good idea that
they seek help via the student counseling service of the faculty if
any or a new one your administration will orchestrate which should be
able to advise whether the student should go home for a period of time
or not. Your administration should cater for cases of this nature
ensuring that affected ulssaites are given necessary preferences when
required.
(B) Financial Problems: A tangible percentage of ulssaites are
financing their program themselves and this can be aided with your
administration paving way for easy access to the school's work-study
program for concerned ulssaites.
(C) Mental Health Problems : Your administration should set up a
mental health team to advice ulssaites that may become mentally
unwell. Students mental health may be exhibited in relatively mild
anxieties or by very severe problems and bizarre behavior. Your mental
health team should be readily available to help ulssaites in such
situation.
(D) Harassment : The harassment policy of the school should be
explored in tackling the cases of harassment of ulssaites within and
outside the faculty.
All these contributes directly towards the success your administration
will bring forth.
(4) Empowerment : A symbiotic relationship was what we had in mind to
have voted you as our president. By saying a symbiotic relationship I
mean we gave you power because we want empowerment from your
administration. We believe your reign as ulssa president will help
ulssaites in bridging the gap in key areas that directly contributes
to a total person. We believe trainings in key areas like leadership,
communication, project management, entrepreneurship and many more will
flood the faculty during your tenure as president as this are things
that can truly make your administration an outstanding one and that
can put your footprints on the sands of time. Fellow ulssaites will
like to graduate with respective certificates coupled with
certification of competence in communication, leadership,
entrepreneurship etc courtesy of the trainings your administration
will make available and affordable.
(5) Succession : It looks funny how the word succession has already
popped up in an administration that is yet to start right? Yes, that
is how it should be as a great leader is known by the quality of
his/her successor. Mr President elect sir, as you discharge your
constitutional responsibilities and more. Do not forget to keep an eye
on ulssaites that will continue the good work you would have started
in the faculty. Groom them and carry them along as posterity will
never forget that about you.
Finally sir, always remember that leadership is servitude to humanity
and to serve us is what you campaigned for. Do not also forget that
leadership is action and not position so always welcome our challenges
as the day ULSSAITES stop bringing you their problems is the day you
have stopped leading us. We have either lost confidence that you can
help us or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of
leadership. So therefore, I pray that God leads you through as I and
other ulssaites expects you to succeed. I pledge my support to your
administration as the love of the faculty remains constant in my
heart.
I remain Hammed Mustapha Olawale (CATALYST), a lover of the faculty of
science and an advocate of common sense.
All the best my President, please do not forget your E-USES.
